1) Have any data been collected for this study already? No, no data have been collected for this study yet.
2) What's the main question being asked or hypothesis being tested in this study? East Asian American candidates are perceived as having low leadership potential partly because they are perceived as uncreative.
3) Describe the key dependent variable(s) specifying how they will be measured. Each participant will read a LinkedIn-like profile of a candidate for a senior leadership position and then rate the candidate (e.g., leadership potential, creativity, assertiveness).
Outcome = leadership potential:
Porath et al. (2015): "I would recommend this person as a leader"; "I believe this person possesses leadership qualities"; "I view this person as a leader" (1 = strongly disagree, 6 = strongly agree).
Focal mediator = perceived creativity:
Zhou & George (2001): "This person is a good source of creative ideas"; "This person comes up with new and practical ideas to improve performance"; "This person comes up with creative solutions to problems" (1 = very unlikely, 6 = very likely)
Alternative mediator = perceived assertiveness
Wallen et al. (2017): "This person speaks up and shares his own views when it is appropriate"; "This person is willing to engage in constructive interpersonal confrontations"; "This person is able to stand his ground in a heated conflict" (1 = very unlikely, 6 = very likely).
4) How many and which conditions will participants be assigned to? Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three conditions in a between-subjects design: East Asian condition, South Asian condition, or White condition
We will manipulate perceived ethnicity by manipulating the name and stated ethnicity of the leadership candidate:
Two profiles in the East Asian condition: A. Wang and A. Kim
Two profiles in the South Asian condition: A. Patel and A. Khan
Two profiles in the White condition: A. Becker and A. Meyer
5) Specify exactly which analyses you will conduct to examine the main question/hypothesis. We will conduct independent-samples t tests to test whether there are no significant differences in any of the focal variables (e.g., perceived leadership potential, perceived creativity) between the two East Asian profiles, between the two South Asian profiles, and between the two White profiles. If not, we will average ratings of the two East Asian profiles (for the East Asian condition), ratings of the two South Asian profiles (for the South Asian condition), and ratings of the two White profiles (for the White condition).
We will conduct independent-samples t tests to test whether the East Asian candidates are perceived as having lower leadership potential than the South Asian candidates and the White candidates-even though the profiles are substantively identical.
We will conduct independent-samples t tests to test whether the East Asian candidates are perceived as having lower creativity (focal mediator) than the South Asian candidates and the White candidates-even though the profiles are substantively identical.
We will conduct independent-samples t tests to test whether the East Asian candidates are perceived as having lower assertiveness (alternative mediator) than the South Asian candidates and the White candidates-even though the profiles are substantively identical.
We will test whether perceived creativity and perceived assertiveness mediate the effect of experimental condition on perceived leadership potential.
6) Describe exactly how outliers will be defined and handled, and your precise rule(s) for excluding observations. Participants will be excluded if they (1) misidentify the ethnicity of the candidate in their condition and (2) fail an attention check question ("Please select 'Very unlikely' for this question).
7) How many observations will be collected or what will determine sample size? No need to justify decision, but be precise about exactly how the number will be determined. We will recruit at least 600 participants who are non-Asian, native English-speaking Americans born in the US with managerial experience.
8) Anything else you would like to pre-register? (e.g., secondary analyses, variables collected for exploratory purposes, unusual analyses planned?) Exploratory analyses: We will also assess perceived general competence and warmth (two general dimensions of social cognition) as alternative mechanisms. We are agnostic about how the three conditions (East Asian, South Asian, and White) compare on these two general dimensions.
