This is an anonymized version of the pre-registration. It was created by the author(s) to use during peer-review.
A non-anonymized version (containing author names) should be made available by the authors when the work it supports is made public.
1) Have any data been collected for this study already? It's complicated. We have already collected some data but explain in Question 8 why readers may consider this a valid pre-registration nevertheless.
2) What's the main question being asked or hypothesis being tested in this study? Paradoxical Knowing Vs. 2 Control Conditions, (1) Concordant Knowing and (2) Believing, heightens perceived threat and three indicators of fanaticism (aggression, determined ignorance [DTI], and willingness to join an extreme group). We propose threat to also mediate this effect. Fanaticism should be lower in the 2 control conditions (likely lowest in the concordant knowing condition). When comparing the Paradoxical Knowing Condition to the two control Conditions mediations should be found via threat (i.e., Paradoxical Knowing heightens threat compared to the 2 other conditions and this increase heightens Fanaticism).
3) Describe the key dependent variable(s) specifying how they will be measured. Threat, and Fanaticism (collapsed across Aggression, DTI, and Willingness to Join Extreme Groups/Movements given that we predict these three indicators to load on a single Fanaticism factor and to exhibit acceptable/good inter-measure reliability). The Fanaticism scale includes 9 items (3 items each for Aggression, DTI, and Joining Extreme Groups), see verbatim materials for exact items. Also, we will measure certainty and unknowability as manipulation checks (3 items each).
4) How many and which conditions will participants be assigned to? 3 Conditions between subjects: Paradoxical Knowing Vs. 2 Control Conditions, (1) Concordant Knowing and (2) Believing. See verbatim materials for exact prompts.
5) Specify exactly which analyses you will conduct to examine the main question/hypothesis. GLMs on Threat and Fanaticism (Collapsed across Aggression, DTI, and Joining Extreme Groups) and on the 2 Manipulation Checks. Overall differences among conditions and then pairwise comparisons comparing the specific conditions. Mediation analyses will be run using Hayes' PROCESS for SPSS, threat will function as the mediator, condition as the predictor, and fanaticism as the outcome variable.
6) Describe exactly how outliers will be defined and handled, and your precise rule(s) for excluding observations. 3 Attention Checks. Participants who fail any attention check will be excluded.
7) How many observations will be collected or what will determine sample size?
No need to justify decision, but be precise about exactly how the number will be determined. 150 participants per condition. Estimated exclusions: 75. 525 participants in total.
8) Anything else you would like to pre-register?
(e.g., secondary analyses, variables collected for exploratory purposes, unusual analyses planned?) Due to a miscommunication, data collection was started slightly before this pre-registration was created/approved. Approximately 150 participants of the 525 participants had been collected before the pre-registration was created/approved. The pre-registration was completed before downloading or viewing any of this data.
