As Predicted:Teacher Growth MTurk Study (#4109)

Created:       05/17/2017 09:15 AM (PT)

This is an anonymized version of the pre-registration.  It was created by the author(s) to use during peer-review.
A non-anonymized version (containing author names) should be made availble by the authors when the work it supports is made public.

1) Have any data been collected for this study already?
No, no data have been collected for this study yet

2) What's the main question being asked or hypothesis being tested in this study?
When given a student's perspective, prompting teachers (MTurkers imagining) to think "empathic" about how their ability to build strong relationships can grow and improve; and (3) get a misbehaving student's perspective on the misbehavior--will lead them respond less negatively to a Black student's misbehavior, as compared to when teachers think "non-empathic" about how teachers' effort to build strong relationships is as a waste of time

3) Describe the key dependent variable(s) specifying how they will be measured.
How severely they want to discipline the student after second misbehavior; How likely are teachers to think the student is a troublemaker; The extent to which they think the misbehavior is indicative of a pattern; How strong they think their relationship is with the student; How likely they are to see themselves referring the student to the principal's office; How responsible they feel for student improving behavior

4) How many and which conditions will participants be assigned to?
Two conditions: Teacher mindset (empathic v. not empathic)

5) Specify exactly which analyses you will conduct to examine the main question/hypothesis.
Linear regression or independent samples t-test predicting each outcome variable with a dummy variable for empathic or non-empathic teacher mindset. Linear regression or independent samples t-test predicting each outcome variable with a dummy variable for empathic or non-empathic teacher mindset while controlling for participant gender, race, and age.

6) Any secondary analyses?

7) How many observations will be collected or what will determine sample size?
No need to justify decision, but be precise about exactly how the number will be determined.

We will open the experiment until we reach 250 MTurk workers.

8) Anything else you would like to pre-register?
(e.g., data exclusions, variables collected for exploratory purposes, unusual analyses planned?)

We will also measure Social Dominance Orientation (SDO; 8 items) and Personality (neuroticism and agreeableness; 12 items) as an exploratory moderator of the effects. We predict that it will be positively correlated with negative responses to misbehavior.

Data will be excluded for participants who fail the attention check. The attention check is: "What was the student's name?" and "Which of the following behaviors did the student NOT do?" Answers: Darnell; Pass notes to another student in class
