As Predicted:Lying Human v Robot Study1 (#37835)

Created:       03/23/2020 06:12 PM (PT)

This is an anonymized version of the pre-registration.  It was created by the author(s) to use during peer-review.
A non-anonymized version (containing author names) should be made available by the authors when the work it supports is made public.

1) Have any data been collected for this study already?
No, no data have been collected for this study yet.

2) What's the main question being asked or hypothesis being tested in this study?
Are judgments of lying influenced by agent type (robot v human) and truth of claim (true v. false)?

3) Describe the key dependent variable(s) specifying how they will be measured.
Forced choice (yes, no):
(1) Did the agent lie?
(2) Did the agent intend to deceive?
(3) Did the agent actually deceive?
(4) Comprehension Check: Is the claim true?
Likert Scale (1-7)
(5) Is the agent to blame?

4) How many and which conditions will participants be assigned to?
2 agent (robot v human) x 2 (true v false)
Thus 4 conditions, to which participants are randomly assigned.

5) Specify exactly which analyses you will conduct to examine the main question/hypothesis.
Basic non-parametric tests for key DV (judgments of lying) across agents and conditions. ANOVA for blame. Correlations of lying judgments with blame, intention to deceive and actual deception.

6) Describe exactly how outliers will be defined and handled, and your precise rule(s) for excluding observations.
Participants will be excluded if they (i) fail an attention check, (ii) respond in under 10 seconds to the main task, (iii) do not correctly answer the comprehension question (whether the claim at hand is true), (iv) are not native English speakers

7) How many observations will be collected or what will determine sample size?
No need to justify decision, but be precise about exactly how the number will be determined.

400 subjects on Amazon Mechanical Turk

8) Anything else you would like to pre-register?
(e.g., secondary analyses, variables collected for exploratory purposes, unusual analyses planned?)

Nothing else to pre-register.
