2) What's the main question being asked or hypothesis being tested in this study?
RQ: Are anger, anxiety, and sympathy differentially related to different forms of collective action?

H1: Anger experienced due to the current situation in Ukraine will predict (a) readiness to engage in confrontational collective action (i.e., to confront politicians about their actions and support armament) and (b) interest in demonstrations with non-pacifist slogans.
H2: Anxiety experienced due to the current situation in Ukraine will predict (a) readiness to engage in resolution oriented collective action (i.e., actions directly aimed at deterring further aggression) and (b) interest in demonstrations with pacifist slogans.
H3: Sympathy with Ukrainians will predict intentions to engage in solidarity-related collective action (i.e., support for humanitarian aid).

3) Describe the key dependent variable(s) specifying how they will be measured.
- confrontational collective action: readiness to show 4 behaviors related to confronting German and EU politicians about their past actions and asking for further armament of Ukraine
- resolution-oriented collective action: readiness to show 4 actions aimed at convincing the German government to endorse (harsher) sanctions against Russia
- solidarity-related collective action: readiness to show 4 actions aimed at convincing the German government to grant help to the Ukrainian people
- Interest in demonstrations: interest in learning more about 18 demonstrations, 9 with non-pacifist (i.e., not calling for peace or negotiations) and 9 with pacifist slogans

4) How many and which conditions will participants be assigned to?
No conditions
Assessed IV: extent of anger, anxiety, and sympathy participants experience related to the situation in Ukraine, each assessed with 5 items.

5) Specify exactly which analyses you will conduct to examine the main question/hypothesis.
We will average items assessing anger, anxiety, and sympathy to form separate scales.
We will invert items as appropriate. Before averaging the readiness items according to the three separate scales, we will compute the respective scale's internal consistency. If alpha < .70, we will drop all items with a negative item-total correlation. Afterwards, items whose omission leads to an increase in internal consistency will be removed.
We will sum up the number of slogans from each category participants selected to receive more information about.

H1a/b will be tested via a regression analysis in which all three emotions are entered simultaneously as predictors of readiness to engage in confrontational collective action and interest in non-pacifist demonstrations.
H2a/b will be tested via a regression analysis in which all three emotions are entered simultaneously as predictors of readiness to engage in resolution-oriented collective action and interest in pacifist demonstrations.
H3 will be tested via a regression analysis in which all three emotions are entered simultaneously as predictors of readiness to engage in solidarity-related collective action

6) Describe exactly how outliers will be defined and handled, and your precise rule(s) for excluding observations.
Inclusion criteria:
- no Ukrainian or Russian migration background
- not having friends or family in Ukraine or Russia
- passed attention check (ticked the appropriate box where indicated)
- completed survey honestly, attentively, in one go, and only once (self-reported)
- non-suspicious answering behavior (did not take less than 3 min to complete)
- post-survey comments do not mention trouble understanding the items
- study subject is not psychology (lab rule)

Any data from Ps who wish to withdraw their data after the debriefing will be deleted according to ethical guidelines. We will carefully check (& report) if excluding Ps not fulfilling the inclusion criteria changes the results.
Outliers: No outliers will be excluded

7) How many observations will be collected or what will determine sample size?
No need to justify decision, but be precise about exactly how the number will be determined.

A prior study showed that the smallest Rsq increase from adding an additional emotion (that was a significant predictor of the respective DV) to the model was 0.02. An a-priori Power analysis using G*Power suggests that to test for such a small increase in Rsq (fsq=0.02) with 80% power (alpha=0.05), 395 participants are required (3 predictors total, 1 tested predictor). Therefore, we aim at recruiting 460 participants to be able to account for necessary exclusions.

8) Anything else you would like to pre-register?
(e.g., secondary analyses, variables collected for exploratory purposes, unusual analyses planned?)

We will compare the data collected for this study with data collected one year ago. We strive to recruit as many participants from the earlier study as possible and will compare their responses (emotions, action readiness, evaluation of similar actions) across time with paired samples t-tests. Should we not be successful in re-recruiting participants, we will compare data from the two time-points descriptively.
