2) What's the main question being asked or hypothesis being tested in this study? Can an intervention that reframes lower class students' identity as resourceful and strong rather than deficient and weak improve students' academic self-confidence and success
3) Describe the key dependent variable(s) specifying how they will be measured. self-perceived potential to succeed, GPA
4) How many and which conditions will participants be assigned to? two conditions: Intervention condition and an active control condition (leading students to reflect on study tips)
5) Specify exactly which analyses you will conduct to examine the main question/hypothesis. ANOVA to test for mean differences between the two groups
6) Describe exactly how outliers will be defined and handled, and your precise rule(s) for excluding observations. Students who did not complete our experimental material will not be included in analyses.
7) How many observations will be collected or what will determine sample size? No need to justify decision, but be precise about exactly how the number will be determined. all lower-class students in the course will get the opportunity to participate (exact sample size is thus unclear).
8) Anything else you would like to pre-register? (e.g., secondary analyses, variables collected for exploratory purposes, unusual analyses planned?) We were informed by course administrators that another intervention will be conducted by another group of researchers at some point during the course. This intervention is unrelated to this study and the hypothesis presented here. As far as we are informed, the content of this intervention will not target students' social identity-based processes (as we do), but self-regulation. We thus do not expect the intervention to interfer with our intervention effects.
