1) Have any data been collected for this study already? No, no data have been collected for this study yet.
2) What's the main question being asked or hypothesis being tested in this study? We want to compare subjects entry decision in Winner takes all (WTA) and Proportional prize (PP) contest of group size 7 with and without zoom chat communication between the group members.
Following are the hypotheses:
1. When the group members are not allowed to communicate between each other using zoom chat, WTA contest of group size 7 will have higher equilibrium probability of entry and higher average number of entrants than PP contest of group size 7.
2. When the group members are allowed to communicate between each other using zoom chat, then the equilibrium probability of entry will decrease both in the WTA contest and PP contest. The quantum of decrease is expected to be higher in WTA contest than PP contest.
3. The average earnings of the group is expected to be higher when group members are allowed to communicate using zoom chat. The inequity in distribution is expected to be lower when group members are allowed to communicate using zoom chat. Both these effects are expected to be stronger for WTA contests than PP contests.
3) Describe the key dependent variable(s) specifying how they will be measured. DV= Whether the subject enters the contest or not (1/0)
The additional DV = No of participants who enter the contest in each of the 32 rounds , the earnings of the participant in a particular round.
4) How many and which conditions will participants be assigned to? The subjects will be randomly assigned to one of the following 4 conditions
WTA contest of group size 7 with no zoom chat communication
PP contest of group size 7 with no zoom chat communication
WTA contest of group size 7 with zoom chat communication
PP contest of group size 7 with zoom chat communication
5) Specify exactly which analyses you will conduct to examine the main question/hypothesis. Since the main DV is binary we will use logit regression along with the linear probability model.
When we focus on number of entrants and average earnings we will use OLS regression.
6) Describe exactly how outliers will be defined and handled, and your precise rule(s) for excluding observations. No data from the subjects will be excluded. However, if a subject does not turn up for the experiment, then computer randomly between the options "entering the contest" and "outside option". This is because if one subject is missing in a group, then other subjects cannot play the game. This data generated on the behalf of missing subject will be removed from further analysis.
7) How many observations will be collected or what will determine sample size? No need to justify decision, but be precise about exactly how the number will be determined. Total sample size is 232

8) Anything else you would like to pre-register? (e.g., secondary analyses, variables collected for exploratory purposes, unusual analyses planned?) We will also measure risk aversion for gains for 3 probability levels. We will also measure loss aversion and measure subject's desire for equity using the dictator game.
